COSOLEACAQUE, VERACRUZ, MEXICO – FEBRUARY 15, 2021 Gladys Merlin Castro was a representative and former mayor of the municipality of Cosoleacaque. Her daughter, Carly Enríquez Merlín, 27, was also involved in politics and wanted to run for mayor.

On the morning of 15 February 2021, two armed men entered their home and shot both of them. In the process, they also managed to rob a safe from which they took a large amount of cash, jewellery and an expensive watch.
To this day, it is unclear whether the murder was a politically motivated act or a robbery. There has been some suspicion that the murder may have been ordered by some family, who were rivals in regional politics. However, this was never proven.
