DAVAO CITY, PHILIPPINES – JULY 25, 2018 Rio Fe Valerio Mendoza, mother of two, died in hospital after eating a traditional Filipino dish – white balut. This is an affordable street food that is made from bird’s egg (usually duck or chicken). The egg is fertilized and inside it is the embryo.

The woman had the misfortune of having an egg prepared in unsuitable conditions and contracted salmonellosis. She fought for her life in the hospital since March 17, 2018, but after many surgical procedures, she lost the fight and died.
