VALSEQUILLO, PUEBLA, MEXICO – FEBRUARY, 2016 25-year-old Samai Alejandra Márquez Salgado was last seen on February 17, 2016, in the Valsequillo area. There, she got into a taxi, from which she last contacted her mother via text message. She wrote that she was scared because her driver was driving in circles. From that moment, her phone was no longer reachable.

Two days later, on February 19, 2016, her dead body was found by the roadside in the Santo Tomás Chautla area. There was a gunshot wound at close range to her temple, indicating she had been executed. Shockingly, she was eight months pregnant at the time of her death.
After the discovery of the body, an extensive investigation was launched. Among the main suspects was Rafael Portillo Abundiz. He was the only one who had a motive. He was the owner of Ego Gym, which Samai regularly attended. They had a sexual relationship even though Rafael had a wife and a four-year-old daughter at home. When Samai became pregnant, she refused to have an abortion, and he was very afraid that his wife would find out about the extramarital child.

Later investigations confirmed that Rafael had indeed planned her death. Reportedly, he had initially planned only to pay his friend to kidnap and scare Samai. However, it escalated into murder. He was convicted of femicide and sentenced to several decades in prison (some sources say 40, others 60 years).
