MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE, USA – MAY 23, 2025 23-year-old Jyrah Smith, mother of three children aged 1, 3, and 6, was shot in the head at close range with a shotgun. Her body was found lying in front of the apartment of her boyfriend Deangelo Mitchell on East Georgia Avenue.

27-year-old Deangelo Mitchell was in a dispute with Jyrah, but claims it was a simple mistake. He said he heard knocking on the door, took a shotgun, and went to open it. According to his statement, he shot at a person he thought was a man with dreads and only then realized it was his girlfriend. After the shooting, he threw the shotgun away and fled the scene without calling an ambulance.

Deangelo Mitchell

Mitchell was no saint and had past problems with the law, including charges of domestic violence. In August 2024, he was arrested for allegedly punching the mother of his child multiple times in the face. In November 2019, he kicked a woman multiple times in the head.

Mitchell was charged with second-degree murder and his bail was set at $760,000. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 9, 2025.

Tamarkus Smith, the victim’s father, in despair and attempt to fight for justice for his daughter’s death, shared photos on his Facebook profile showing her skull open. His wish was for everyone to see what that bastard did to his daughter.

Thanks to the great American justice system, justice will surely be served. However, the family also struggles financially after her death.
