GREECE – AUGUST 14, 2005 A Boeing 737-300 operated by the Cypriot company Helios crashed into a mountain north of Athens. All 121 passengers and crew members on board died. The aircraft was flying on flight 552 from Larnaca (Cyprus), via Athens (Greece), to Prague (Czech Republic). This is the most fatal air accident in Greek history and one of the worst accidents of this type of aircraft.
Shortly after take-off, the plane lost cabin pressure, which due to hypoxia, stunned all the people on board, including the crew. It was later revealed that the plane’s pressurisation system had been left in manual mode, although it should have been switched to automatic.
The plane continued to fly on autopilot until it ran out of fuel. Eventually, it crashed.
