KABUL, AFGHANISTAN – AUGUST, 2017 Irfaan-ul-lah, 20, lost his thumb and three fingers in the terrorist bombing. The mutilation of his hand made his life difficult as he found it difficult to perform even the simplest of activities. After two long years of searching, he found a doctor who decided to use modern medicine to help him.
Ifraan underwent a thumb auto-transplant. A toe from his foot was relocated to the missing spot. It is a very complicated surgery as the toe has to be sculpted to become a thumb. The surgery lasted almost 7 hours. It was successful and greatly improved the patient’s quality of life.
