The man suffered from an extremely rare form of soft tissue cancer called malignant synovioma. The cancer literally destroyed half of his face. The plastic surgeons did the best they could to save his face. It may not look aesthetically pleasing, but its purpose is primarily protective against inflammation. He had a skin autotransplant.
