LEESBURG, FLORIDA, USA – AUGUST 20, 2026 32-year-old Eric Sharp died in the Leesburg area after police officers responded to a report of a violent domestic incident involving a firearm. His family had previously called 911 and said they were afraid that Sharp would shoot someone.
When officers arrived at a house on Morningside Drive, Sharp was reportedly outside and had a handgun with him. Officers repeatedly ordered him to lie on the ground. Body camera footage then shows Sharp bending down toward the ground and reaching for the gun again. The officers then opened fire, and Sharp suffered fatal injuries.
None of the officers were injured during the incident. The officers who fired their weapons were temporarily placed on administrative leave, and the circumstances of the shooting are being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
