LARGAON, CHHATTISGARH, INDIA – AUGUST 5, 2026 In the Markatola-Largaon area of the Narharpur forest range in Kanker district, a tragic sloth bear attack occurred in which two siblings died and another person suffered serious injuries.
According to available information, the siblings were near an agricultural area at the time of the attack when an aggressive bear suddenly attacked them. The animal attacked several people and killed two members of the family at the scene. The victims were reportedly Halal Jurri (around 45 years old) and Khorin Bai (around 40 years old).
Another person suffered serious injuries in the attack and was taken for medical treatment. After the attack, local residents tried to drive the bear away, but the animal remained near the scene of the incident. Forest department officials and police later arrived at the location, handled the situation, and secured the area.
The bear was eventually neutralized using tranquilizers so that the victims’ bodies could be safely removed and further attacks could be prevented. Authorities later warned residents about moving through the area and launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
Sloth bears are widespread in some parts of India, although attacks on humans are not common. Conflicts often occur in areas where human settlements and agricultural land are located close to forest regions.
In the event of a bear encounter, it is recommended not to run, as this may trigger pursuit. It is advisable to remain calm, slowly move away, avoid direct eye contact with the animal, do not attempt to feed it or approach it, and, if possible, create a barrier between yourself and the bear. During an immediate attack, it is advisable to protect the head and neck and try to remain in a defensive position until the danger has passed.
