Valente died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police found two firearms and other evidence linking him to the attack near his body.

Valente, a Portuguese citizen and former Brown University student, was suspected of carrying out the attack that occurred on December 13, 2025, on the university campus in Providence, Rhode Island. Two students, Ella Cook (19) and MukhammadAziz Umurzokov (18), were killed during the shooting, and several others were injured. Valente had studied physics as a graduate student at Brown University from 2000 to 2001 but left the university without obtaining a degree.
Investigators later also linked him to the murder of Nuno F.G. Loureiro, a physics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Loureiro was shot and killed at his home in Brookline, Massachusetts, on December 15, 2025. The two men had known each other from their earlier studies in Portugal, where they attended the same academic institution.
Police were able to identify Valente partly through information from a witness, security camera footage, and a rental vehicle connected to the locations of both shootings. His vehicle was later found at the storage facility in Salem, where police also discovered his body. An autopsy later showed that he had died approximately two days before his body was found.
The subsequent investigation revealed additional information about his preparations for the attack. Video recordings were found in the storage unit in which Valente admitted responsibility for the shooting and stated that he had planned the attack for an extended period. However, he did not state the exact motive in his recordings, and investigators were unable to conclusively determine one.
