GAZA STRIP, PALESTINE – APRIL 3, 2025 Israeli airstrike hit the Dar al-Arqam school complex in the Al-Tuffah neighborhood in northeastern Gaza City. At the time, the building was being used as a shelter for Palestinians who had been displaced from their homes as a result of the war. According to the Palestinian Civil Defense, at least 27 to 31 people were killed in the attack and approximately 100 others were injured. Women and children were among the victims.
After the strike, people remained trapped under the rubble. Rescuers and local residents attempted to free them, while according to Palestinian sources, the school was struck again shortly after the initial attack while rescue operations were underway. Several people remained missing.
The Israeli military said that the target of the strike was not the school itself, but a facility used by Hamas as a command and control center. According to the Israeli side, Hamas members were present in the building and measures were taken during the attack to reduce the risk to civilians.
Palestinian authorities and witnesses, on the other hand, said that the building was sheltering displaced families. Several survivors said that dozens of civilians were present in the compound at the time of the attack.
The strike came shortly after the resumption of large-scale Israeli military operations in Gaza, which followed the collapse of an approximately two-month ceasefire on March 18, 2025. The strike on Dar al-Arqam therefore occurred during a period of intense airstrikes that also hit other sites being used as shelters for displaced residents.
The exact number of victims varies among sources because rescue operations continued after the initial casualty figures were released. Independent verification of all the circumstances surrounding the attack is also difficult given the situation in Gaza. What is certain is that the strike hit a building filled with civilians and caused dozens of deaths and around one hundred injuries.
