GUAYAQUIL, ECUADOR – SEPTEMBER 12, 2024 Director of Ecuador’s largest prison, Penitenciaría del Litoral, María Daniela Icaza, was attacked in her car on a highway about 14 km north of Guayaquil as she was returning from dinner with a colleague. Witnesses said that two cars blocked the car’s path and forced it to stop. Two gunmen got out of the cars and started shooting at the passenger seat where María was sitting. The driver was wounded but survived. He was not their main target. María Daniela Icaza died on the spot.

Police believe her murder was a contract killing. Nowadays, attacks on prison staff are very common in Ecuador. María had even asked the government for bodyguards a few days before her murder, but no one had yet managed to approve her request.
