GUAYAQUIL, GUAYAS, ECUADOR – MAY 30, 2025 22-year-old Erick Javier Ramos Sánchez lost his right arm after an explosive device he was allegedly attempting to use in an extortion attempt detonated prematurely, according to police. The incident occurred near an auto parts store at the intersection of Ayacucho and Décima streets.
According to investigators, Ramos Sánchez was supposed to throw the device at the business, but the explosion occurred while he was still holding it in his hand. The man suffered a severe injury that resulted in the amputation of his limb, and his accomplices later took him to a hospital, where police arrested him.
Police said the case was connected to the extortion of local business owners. Threatening messages demanding money had reportedly appeared at the business before the attack. According to police, Ramos Sánchez had ties to the Latin Kings gang and had previously faced criminal charges several times.
