MOSCOW REGION, RUSSIA 11-year-old boy Ilja wanted to ride on the roof of a train as part of the phenomenon called train surfing. In front of onlookers, he was struck by an electric current from the train wires. By the time help arrived, he was already dead.
Train surfing is an extremely risky activity during which people, seeking an adrenaline rush, ride on the roof of a train. It is dangerous not only because of the risk of falling but especially due to the risk of being electrocuted by the overhead wires. Even if the train surfer does not touch the wire directly, a strong electric field around the wires can strike a person through the air from several meters away (especially in wet conditions).
