MANAUS, AMAZONAS, BRAZIL – NOVEMBER 16, 2019 Brutal massacre of the Roque family took place in the Nova Cidade district, shaking not only the local community but the entire country of Brazil. When armed attackers broke into their home, they began firing indiscriminately at everyone inside. There were seven family members in the house at the time. The gunmen killed five of them and injured the remaining two.
Among the victims were:
44-year-old Márcia Gonçalves de Jesus – the family’s aunt who was visiting
14-year-old Isadora de Jesus Roque – the youngest daughter
17-year-old Adriana (sometimes referred to as Poliana) de Jesus Roque – Isadora’s sister
18-year-old Luiz Carlos de Jesus Roque – a young man active in Christian youth groups
21-year-old (some sources say 23) Edmundo de Jesus Roque – brother of the previous victims

The injured:
34-year-old Rosilene (some sources mention Rosilana) de Jesus Roque – the mother
20-year-old (or 21, according to some sources) Bruno de Jesus Roque – another family member
According to all available information, the main target of the attack by the sicarios was Edmundo, who had become involved in drug trafficking and was using his family’s house as a stash and distribution point. This theory is supported by the fact that police discovered a large quantity of drugs hidden in various places inside the home. It is highly likely that the rest of the family had no idea about his criminal activities.
The attack was extremely brutal. Each victim was shot in the head, and in some cases, the shots were fired at point-blank range in an execution-style manner. Police believe the attack is part of a broader conflict between rival drug gangs.
Hundreds of people attended the funeral of the Roque family members. For many, it was their only way to protest the violence, as they are too afraid to speak to the police or media out of fear of retaliation. A large number of church representatives were also present at the funeral, especially in memory of Luiz, who frequently attended church gatherings and dreamed of becoming a pastor.
