COLOMBIA Extortion gang made an example out of a fruit vendor to show other business owners what can happen if they refuse to pay protection money. The gang’s hitmen caught him while he was working and murdered him with several shots to the head.
Unfortunately, extortion has been a long-term problem for small and medium-sized business owners in Colombia. For criminal gangs, it is an easy source of income. It is estimated that across Colombia, gangs collect hundreds of millions of dollars a year through extortion.
