BARRA DE SÃO FRANCISCO, BRAZIL Vitória Marchioli was born with a genetic disorder called Treacher Collins Syndrome. Because of this syndrome, 40 bones in her face did not develop, which affected her eyes. When she was born, doctors gave her only a few hours to live and advised her parents to start making funeral arrangements already. But they refused to give up.
In the photos taken in 2017, Vitória is now 9 years old. Her parents believe she has survived this long because of the love and care they give her. They also said they struggle with frequent public ridicule about their daughter’s appearance.
