HAITI Thief was caught while attempting to steal and brought before a people’s tribunal, which decided that he should die. Among other things, he was accused of several previous thefts. An enraged crowd tied him up, lynched him, and burned him alive.
Haiti is often described by many as a country of despair and misery with no future. Armed gangs control most of the capital and large areas of the countryside. The police and state institutions are corrupt and inactive. As a result, residents in large parts of the country are forced to take justice into their own hands. Physical punishments, including the death penalty for theft, are extremely common there.
