OBUASI, GHANA – JANUARY 18, 2025 Approximately 60 men broke into the secure area of the AngloGold Ashanti gold mine. They were equipped with mining equipment as well as rifles and guns. Their intention was to break into the shafts and illegally extract gold. However, the army was present at the site and a shootout ensued. Between 7 and 9 illegal miners were killed.
The video shows one of them. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries. He later lost his vital signs and all attempts to resuscitate him failed.
The Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners has denied the official reports. They said the miners were unarmed and were massacred by the army. President John Dramani Mahama has expressed regret over the incident and promised a fair investigation.
