JALANDHAR, PUNJAB, INDIA – FEBRUARY 6, 2026 43-year-old local leader of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Satinder Pal Singh Jogi, known as Lucky Oberoi, was assassinated in a broad daylight armed attack. The attack took place around 7:30 a.m., shortly after he left a gurdwara in the upscale Model Town neighborhood and got into his Mahindra Thar. Two suspects arrived on a scooter or motorcycle and fired eight to ten shots at the vehicle within seconds, with at least five bullets striking Oberoi. Although he was immediately taken to the private Fortis Hospital, doctors were unable to save his life.

The attack was captured by security cameras. The footage shows that the entire shooting lasted about ten seconds. According to witnesses, the attackers were wearing dark hooded clothing and fled immediately after the shooting. Police recovered spent shell casings, reviewed surveillance footage from the surrounding area, and launched a large-scale manhunt for the suspects.
The murder sparked a strong political reaction. Opposition parties accused the Punjab government of failing to ensure adequate security and pointed to several other recent violent attacks on political leaders in the state. Lucky Oberoi was a well-known figure in the local AAP organization, and his wife had previously run unsuccessfully in municipal elections for the same party.
Initial information suggested that the motive may have been personal revenge, as police believed the victim and the attackers likely knew each other. Two days later, investigators announced that four people had been charged in connection with the case, including notorious gangster Joga Foldiwala. According to police, the murder was preceded by long-standing personal disputes, while detectives are also investigating possible involvement of an organized crime network. Some Indian media outlets also reported that Joga Foldiwala claimed responsibility for the murder. He had reportedly once been a close acquaintance of Oberoi before their relationship turned into open hostility.
