OYOUN, JAHRA GOVERNORATE, KUWAIT – AUGUST 15, 2009 Wedding tent fire claimed 57 lives and left approximately 90 people injured. According to investigators, the arson attack was carried out by Nasra Yussef Mohammad al-Enezi, the groom’s first wife, who was 23 years old at the time. Her husband was getting married for the second time that day.
According to the indictment, the woman doused the tent with gasoline and set it on fire out of revenge over her husband’s second wedding. Dozens of women and children were celebrating inside the tent when the fire broke out.
The flames spread through the structure within minutes. The tent had only one exit, where a crush developed as people panicked. Many victims suffered extensive burns, and some bodies were so badly charred that DNA testing was required to identify them.
According to reports from the time, Nasra Al-Enezi initially confessed to starting the fire but later denied guilt in court, claiming that her confession had been coerced. In March 2010, she was convicted of murdering 57 people and sentenced to death. The verdict was upheld by the Supreme Court, and she was hanged on January 25, 2017.
Following the tragedy, Kuwaiti authorities banned the use of wedding tents. The disaster highlighted the deadly consequences of inadequate safety measures at large gatherings.
