Papuan separatists attacked residents of remote mountain village

PAPUA, INDONESIA Members of an armed Papuan separatist group ambushed a remote mountain village. After driving security forces out of the village following a shootout, they began terrorizing local civilians whom they considered pro-Indonesian. Several of them were tortured and executed.

According to all available information, the incident took place in 2020 in Nduga Regency, which is located in Highland Papua Province. However, this information has not been 100% verified.

The conflict in Indonesian Papua is a long-running separatist struggle between the Indonesian government and armed groups seeking independence for the region. Separatists attack soldiers, police officers, and civilians considered supporters of Indonesia, carrying out ambushes, kidnappings, and the burning of buildings. Indonesian security forces conduct military operations against them, which are also criticized due to alleged human rights violations against local residents.
