WEST PAPUA, INDONESIA Footage of Papuan separatists mutilating the body of an alleged civilian has leaked online. After executing him in the middle of a harsh jungle, they mutilated his body by cutting off all of his limbs and his head with machetes.
Papuan separatists are fighting for the independence of West Papua, which is part of Indonesia. This is not a conventional frontline war, but rather a guerrilla and political struggle. They attack security forces, infrastructure, and military posts.
Although civilians are not their primary target, similar cases are unfortunately not uncommon. In most cases, it is enough for them to suspect someone of cooperating with the Indonesian government, or simply working for a company that, in the eyes of separatists, represents a symbol of Indonesian control over the territory (for example, employees of mining companies).
