BUFFALO, NEW YORK, USA – FEBRUARY 24, 2024 Edward Holmes, 58, was shot and killed by Buffalo police on Reed Street.
Body cam footage shows officers arriving to find Holmes with a shotgun. After being ordered to drop it, he fired once. Officers responded with 20 rounds, hitting him twice.
Police confirmed Holmes called 911 on himself, describing a shotgun-wielding man who would shoot if approached. Authorities deemed it suicide by cop.
Buffalo PD defended the force used, while Councilwoman Leah Halton-Pope criticized the lack of de-escalation. The Attorney General’s office is investigating, and both officers are on leave.
Holmes’ family disputes the police account, with his son saying, “I don’t buy it,” and his daughter stating, “He called for help, and they killed him.”
