The attack was claimed by ISIS-K, a branch of the Islamic State in Khorasan. This group is known for its brutality and responsibility for a series of terrorist attacks in the region.

Immediately following the explosion, panic and gunfire broke out around the airport. Some witnesses reported that the gunfire was a result of American soldiers’ reactions to the attack, while others claimed it was due to the panic among the troops. The Pentagon later acknowledged the possibility that some civilians may have been hit by coalition forces’ gunfire.

Situation at the airport before the attack

The attack prompted international condemnation and expressions of solidarity with the victims and their families. U.S. President Joe Biden called the fallen soldiers “heroes” and vowed that those responsible for the attack would be “pursued and punished.”

In response to the attack, the United States carried out retaliatory airstrikes against ISIS-K targets in Afghanistan. The incident highlighted the instability in the region and the complexity of the situation during the evacuation from Afghanistan.

The Kabul airport attack remains one of the most tragic events associated with the withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan and serves as a reminder of the dangers that continue to persist in the region.
