LA PLAYA DE BELÉN, NORTH SANTANDER, COLOMBIA – MARCH 20, 2024 Leidy Lázaro Pava, 38, was walking along the roadside with her equally aged boyfriend Lenin Guerrero. She was looking for a cell phone signal, so she also went to the grass off the roadway. To her great misfortune, she stepped on an anti-tank mine. The blast literally tore her to pieces and she died on the spot. Her boyfriend’s legs were blown off, but he survived.
Colombia’s border region with Venezuela has been the scene of violence between militia groups since 2018. These fights are funded entirely by drugs, so it’s not surprising that they also have modern military technology like anti-tank mines.
