DHANKUND, BANKA, BIHAR, INDIA – DECEMBER 26, 2023 20-year-old woman, Anshu Devi, committed suicide by hanging. Her mother, Rekha Devi, accused her in-laws of murder, claiming they strangled her during a domestic dispute.
Anshu Devi married 25-year-old Lalu Yadav in 2020. The dowry agreement included a motorcycle, a refrigerator, and a cash amount of 125,000 rupees (equivalent of 1470 USD). A few months after the marriage, her husband and his family began displaying violent behavior, leading to frequent domestic conflicts. Anshu often returned to her mother’s home to seek refuge from these problems.
The last contact with her mother was on December 24, 2023, when Anshu informed her about her situation over the phone. Two days later, on December 26, 2023, Lalu Yadav called to inform her that Anshu had committed suicide by hanging. Upon arriving at the scene, her mother and relatives found Anshu lifeless, with only her mother-in-law, Rajni Devi, present at the house. She claimed Anshu had hanged herself.
Rekha Devi filed a written complaint at the police station, accusing her in-laws of murdering her daughter during a domestic dispute. The police have initiated an investigation and assured that appropriate action will be taken against those responsible.
