NEW DELHI, INDIA, 2013 Bodies of a twenty-year-old man and a sixteen-year-old girl, whose wrists were tied together with a piece of cloth, were found in a river. Both bodies were discovered several days after they disappeared, and an autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was drowning.
The investigation revealed that the pair were not biological siblings. However, the girl considered the young man to be her so-called Rakhi brother. This is a traditional Indian custom in which a woman ties a decorative sacred thread called a rakhi around a man’s wrist, symbolically creating a brother-sister relationship between them.
During the investigation, police found that the young man had been experiencing personal problems related to a previous romantic relationship and had left a farewell note shortly before his disappearance in which he expressed feelings of guilt. The girl also left behind a note stating that she did not want to live without her Rakhi brother.
