SANTA CRUZ DO CAPIBARIBE, PERNAMBUCO, BRAZIL – JUNE 12, 2013 Only 17 years old, Gisely Lopes do Nascimento was the victim of a gang of young home invaders. 19 year old Jonata Honório da Silva, nicknamed Tanda, was considered the most dangerous criminal in the area despite his young age. Along with his accomplice, 20-year-old Otávio Soares da Silva Júnior, and Júnior’s 23-year-old girlfriend, Tamires Raiane Alves da Silva, they often committed robberies and were not afraid to kill in the process.

Gisela’s death led to their discovery when police received an anonymous tip that all those involved were hiding out at Tamires’ home. A search of the home revealed a lot of stolen goods at the scene, which helped convict everyone of other robberies. These included luxury clothing, five mobile phones, a 32-inch television, a Honda motorcycle and cash of BRL 400 (equivalent to US$180 in June 2013). In addition to the goods, firearms were also found.
- Stolen motorcycle
- Stolen car
- Other stolen items and weapons
While in police custody, Tanda confessed to committing the murder himself. He also confessed to the murder of Luiz Thiago Ferreira, 19, in the São Domingos neighbourhood of Brejo da Madre de Deus. Although he confessed to only two crimes, police were investigating him for dozens more. Police also found that Tanda had nothing to do outside at the time of the murder and that he had fled FUNASE (Fundação de Atendimento Socioeducativo). This is a facility that provides social and educational services to juveniles who are in conflict with the law.
