PAMEKASAN, EAST JAVA, INDONESIA – NOVEMBER 28, 2024 5 residents of the small village of Jarin found death in a well. When a resident named Rahman heard screams and cries for help, he went to see what was happening. He saw 5 people fighting for their lives in the well. But he made the right decision and did not try to save himself but called other villagers to the spot. This probably saved his life.
The well was filled with toxic gas from decomposing bamboo peels. These peels are soaked in water and then made into sacks for drying tobacco.
Locals pulled the bodies of the victims out and took them to Smart Pamekasan Hospital. But it was too late and all of them were declared dead.
Although not yet confirmed, when organic materials decay in an environment with normal oxygen, they can release hydrogen sulfide, methane, carbon monoxide and ammonia. Two of these, hydrogen sulfide and ammonia, have a higher density than air, which means that one of them is probably behind their deaths.
