MANAUS, AMAZONAS, BRAZIL – APRIL 20, 2014 At night, 29-year-old Ismael da Costa de Farias entered the home of his 22-year-old neighbor, Dayara Araújo de Oliveira, in the Parque das Laranjeiras area of Manaus. According to investigators, he originally intended to steal her cell phone, but Dayara woke up and began screaming. Ismael then struck her and strangled her with an electrical cable.

Dayara was later found dead in her home. Investigators also discovered biological traces on her body, which led to DNA testing. However, Ismael attempted to circumvent the investigation and paid 27-year-old Jonas Vieira Teixeira 50 Brazilian reais to impersonate him during the sample collection. Police took a photograph of him during the collection, however, and uncovered the fraud.
After being detained, Ismael reportedly confessed to the murder and told police that he desecrated Dayara’s body after her death. Police also discovered that the stolen phone had been sold, and Ismael was subsequently charged with qualified murder. Jonas Vieira Teixeira faced charges of procedural fraud and identity forgery.
