ITAREMA, CEARÁ, BRAZIL – OCTOBER 30, 2023 In the early morning hours, a group of armed men broke into a house in the Enseada dos Patos area. The attackers headed to a room where four people were located and shot all of them. Other people were also inside the house and survived the attack.
The victims were Maria Eduarda dos Santos Nascimento (13), Maria Josina dos Santos Oliveira (20), Maria Gabriela Jaques (24), and Francisco da Guia Oliveira (17). Maria Eduarda dos Santos Nascimento and Maria Josina dos Santos Oliveira were sisters; Maria Josina dos Santos Oliveira left behind a five-year-old son.
According to investigators, the attack was not random. The perpetrators were allegedly members of the criminal group Comando Vermelho (CV), and the primary target was reportedly Francisco da Guia Oliveira, whom police associated with the rival group Guardiões do Estado (GDE). However, the investigation found no evidence that all four victims were members of GDE.
Police determined that the perpetrators may have been monitoring the victims through a live Instagram broadcast before the attack. According to the investigation, Davi Sousa de Oliveira (23), known as “Fazendeiro,” contacted other group members after watching the broadcast and organized the attack.
The investigation eventually linked seven people to the massacre. Those charged included Davi Sousa de Oliveira (23), Jeremias Teixeira de Sousa (27), Helder dos Santos Sousa, Welisson dos Santos Nascimento, Francisco Jocielmo Guedes da Silva, Saulo dos Santos de Castro, and Henrique do Nascimento Moreno (23). Henrique do Nascimento Moreno was killed during a police operation shortly after the massacre. Davi Sousa de Oliveira was arrested the following day along with Jeremias Teixeira de Sousa.
In October 2025, police announced the arrest of the last of the seven suspects, a 24-year-old man, meaning that according to authorities, everyone linked to the case had eventually been taken into custody.
