PRAYAGRAJ, UTTAR PRADESH, INDIA – APRIL 15, 2023 Atiq Ahmed, an infamous mafia boss from the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, was shot dead while under police escort. Along with his brother Ashraf, he was giving a brief statement to journalists when attackers approached them, posing as reporters, and opened fire. The entire attack was captured on camera and broadcast live, causing massive shock in India and sparking intense debate about security and the influence of organized crime.
Atiq Ahmed was one of the most notorious figures in India’s criminal underworld and later entered politics. From a young age, he built a reputation for violence and gradually created a large criminal network involved in extortion, kidnappings, land grabbing, and murders, mainly in the Prayagraj area. Despite this, he managed to enter public life and win several political seats. He was linked to dozens of serious crimes and had more than 100 criminal cases against him. Police seized assets worth billions of rupees, and Ahmed eventually ended up in prison, where authorities claimed he continued to run his operations.
