The newborn was accidentally partially scalped during a cesarean delivery. This is a known but unlikely risk. It is reported that only about 1% of newborns suffer injuries during birth in this way.
Surgeons were able to sew the skin back into place. Although the girl will have a lifelong scar on her head, there will be no further health consequences.
