Unarmed Iranian protester shot in head by sniper

IRAN – JANUARY, 2026 Video captures an unarmed protester who was killed by Iranian security forces during anti-government demonstrations. The man was shot directly in the head by a sniper and suffered devastating injuries as a result. A piece of his brain literally flew out of his head.

The footage fits into the broader picture of the violent suppression of protests that erupted in Iran on December 28, 2025, and spread across the country in January 2026. The protests were initially driven primarily by a deep economic crisis and worsening living conditions, but they gradually took on a strong anti-government character.

As the demonstrations intensified, security forces began using live ammunition, shotguns loaded with metal projectiles, tear gas, and other means against crowds. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch documented cases in which protesters were shot in the head and torso.

The situation escalated significantly around January 8 and 9, 2026, when, according to Human Rights Watch, security forces launched large-scale violent crackdowns against protesters in several parts of the country. Iranian authorities also severely restricted internet access and communications, making it difficult to verify the number of deaths and the circumstances of individual cases.

The exact death toll remains disputed. Human rights organizations have reported thousands of deaths, while Iranian authorities have published significantly different figures. Independent verification of the overall toll was extremely difficult due to the widespread internet blackout and restrictions on foreign media access to the events.
