When tension or frustration builds up in the human body, the brain switches into a fast defensive reaction mode. In such a moment, the limbic system dominates and the prefrontal cortex – the part responsible for rational thinking and self-control – functions only in a weakened state. That is why people often do things during an outburst of rage that they would not do under normal circumstances.
Strong emotions, however, do not mean insanity, because even a very angry person still has at least partial ability to control their actions. Anyone who suffers from uncontrollable outbursts of anger is advised to learn how to manage it with professionals, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist.
