NABIRE REGENCY, PAPUA TENGAH, INDONESIA – JULY 30, 2026 Brutal murder of a 14-year-old girl occurred. Chelsy Kaltrin Chandra, a 14-year-old second-year junior high school student, was found dead in the Kampung Waroki area of Nabire Barat District. Her body was discovered in the evening and was severely burned, which initially made her identification very difficult.

Police received a report about the discovery of the body at approximately 9:00 p.m. local time. Investigators and identification unit personnel immediately arrived at the scene, secured the crime scene, and transported the body to RSUD Nabire Hospital. Due to the extensive burns, the victim could not be immediately identified. Police therefore used, among other things, fingerprints and worked with the local population registration office. They subsequently confirmed that the victim was Chelsy Kaltrin Chandra.
The investigation then focused on her former boyfriend, AWS, who was also 14 years old. Police discovered that he was one of the last people to have been in contact with Chelsy before her death. Based on witness statements, camera footage, and an examination of the victim’s last activities, investigators were able to track down the suspect. AWS was arrested in the early morning hours of July 31, just a few hours after her body was discovered.

According to the findings so far, Chelsy and AWS began dating in May 2026. Their relationship later ended, and AWS subsequently began a relationship with another girl. However, tension remained between the former partners. Investigators said that Chelsy had allegedly threatened to reveal information about their previous intimate relationship to his parents. According to the investigative theory, fear that the relationship would be exposed was one of the main motives for the crime.
According to police, AWS prepared a knife and a bottle of kerosene before his final meeting with Chelsy. He then allegedly invited her to meet in a more remote part of the Waroki area. Investigators believe that this was not a random conflict, but an act that he had prepared in advance. The investigation therefore later proceeded on the theory of premeditated murder.
At the scene, an attack allegedly took place in which AWS, according to the investigative version, assaulted the girl and subsequently killed her. He then allegedly poured kerosene over her body and set it on fire. He subsequently left the scene and returned home.
Chelsy Kaltrin Chandra came from a family of Torajan descent, and her death also affected the local Toraja community. Her mother, Maria Tasik, was reportedly her primary parent after Chelsy lost her father at the age of two. Chelsy was buried on August 2, 2026, at Kimi Cemetery in Nabire. Thousands of relatives, friends, and other residents attended the funeral.
By the end of August, the case had reached the trial stage, with the prosecutor seeking a 10-year prison sentence for AWS. According to the victim’s family’s legal representative, the prosecutor based the request on the finding that the elements of premeditated murder had been established. Because the defendant is a child, he is subject to special criminal-procedure rules, and the maximum sentence is limited to 10 years, according to the family’s legal representative. A final court verdict is still pending.
