WASECA, MINNESOTA, USA – APRIL 20, 1999 Cally Jo Larson was a 12-year-old girl who was brutally murdered in Waseca, Minnesota, on April 20, 1999. The crime occurred when she returned home from school and encountered a burglar who had broken into the house. The perpetrator, Lorenzo Sanchez, an undocumented immigrant, assaulted her, committed a stabbing, and used an electrical cord to strangle her. Her body was discovered by her 16-year-old sister, Jayme, which added to the family’s trauma.
Lorenzo Sanchez was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, with the possibility of parole in 2030. During the trial, several charges, including kidnapping and sexual assault, were dropped. The case brought attention to immigration law enforcement issues since Sanchez had previous legal problems and should have been deported before the crime occurred.
